You can use an external Digital tuner, but remember it's going to need a suitable Antenna or it just won't deliver a picture at all.
You may end up spending ￡50 just to get your existing Antenna upgraded, and bear in mind this is per TV set, not just per house. You will have to get a digi box
but the same TV can be used Just get a Freeview set-top box, which are now available for less than ￡50. You can plug this into your existing TV. Not at all you will however require a set top box or cable TV stations wont be sending anymore analogue signals, but you will be able to display any input from a digital reciever (cable or digibox) which is connected to your TV (by scart lead or A/V) just need a set top box if your tv has no scart socket, you will need a new tv you will have to buy HD ready tv because programmes will be made in HD(high definition). your freeview box will not work if you have an ordinary tv in 2012.
if you do buy a HD ready tv make sure its no smaller than 26"
the bigger the better so you can benifit from the quality.
smaller tv's only can hold so many dots per square inch ,
HD tv's can put thousands of dots in an inch so your picture would be clearer and sharper.
So yes your tv will be useless unless you have a playstation etc Oh dear......
