I know images can damage the screen if they are left there for long enough. These are the bars the TV puts up on either side of the widescreed to make it a standard 4:3 aspect ratio.

Sorry Larry you're wrong about one thing. Plasma will always have the ability to burn-in static images, since it's a phosphur based display. This is NOT a rumor, and it's NOT improved with the newer products. And the plasmas at the airport do burn. The 4:3 vs 16:9 on the plasma will definitely cause burn in after time.

Most of the burn in rumors that were heard, were just that - rumors. The only way its going to burn in on your plasma is if you leave the screen on 4:3 for 3 days or so straight, if you do this then the phosphors in the set can lean towards burn in, but if you start to notice this happening there are ways to fix it with white screens, and static screens left on for 45 minutes or longer to reverse the effects. Most plasmas will never have this problem, its more of a myth that's out there. If it was really a problem, airports, hotels, and restaurants wouldn't run them 24 hours a day on news channels with tickers. The best way to look at burn in, is to look at your current TV and see if you have burn in, and if you don't then the odds of you getting it on a new set are about the same. I hope this helps.
