Why does my TV set (CRT) make crackling noises when I turn it off?

After using it for a couple of hours, my Sony 42' CRT TV make a crackling noise when I turn it off. Whyh is that? It also happens with other CRT's I've got.

Static electricity. It takes a heck of a lot of power to run that monster CRT, and that creates a large amount of static ... particularly if you live in a dry or dusty climate.

This sounds like a pretty valuable device. I would consider taking it to the TV Repair shop for a cleaning. There is no immediate danger from that crackling, but eventually, it could cause a short in your electronics. probably dust or humidity... how's the air in your house? You can feel it if you bring ur hand (with hair) near the TV just after shut down.

I can do it in front of my 27inch but wont advise u to touch it.. u might get a shock when u touch a metal. Just a guess, but it's probably static electricity. It often makes little cracking or popping sounds, but the bigger items can make sounds like a thunder "pow". Mine does this also. It is a new TV that I bought last February and I noticed this when the weather got better and the windows were open all the time; I figured it was the climate (humidity and heat). .........it is the static on the screen.............plug the TV out at night and clean the screen........do it .....and the static will go.........taking the plug completely off the power is the solution...... Static build up on a picture tube is quite normal; you can often hear the discharge -- a kind of 'shooshing' noise -- when the TV is switched off. This static discharge is usually not enough to do damage to your set.
