Why does my TV keep switching itself to stand by?

It is a Phillips, and after you first switch it on it works for about 20 seconds and then switches itself to standby. This can happen two or three times before it decides to stop, and it is drving me crazy! Any suggestions?

i have had this problem i have a phillips and what you need to do is unplug all other stuff you have connected : eg sky box, home cinema and check if it works when they are not pluged in, if it is that you need to change the extras for compatable ones. when mine did this i went to a median and it was my nan giving me a sign! 4 u it might just be the telly has a fault or it needs to warm up before working If you've ruled out the cat or dog pressing the remote control (or indeed if the standby button on the remote gets stuck), then Its faulty. Simple. Send it back or call out a service engineer. Philips have a problem with their switches so try this.

When you switch on, hold onto the switch for a few second and keep it depressed. If this doesn't work send it back or have a new switch put on. i would suggest....you should go to a technician!LOL time for A new goggle box Tracey its haunted ...

my suggestion is to throw it out the window or beat it with a baseball bat - that should cure it switching into standby, turning on might even be cured too :-) My mums Phillips tv did this, you should be able to contact Phillips because they were told it had been a major fault. you have to set it. mine is a phillips it self but it doesnot has this problem cause i set it. do you still have the instructons? you also have to switch the timer, or it will auto off. Sounds like there is a problem with the power supply or power management unit. If it's a newer TV, it could even be a problem with the image processor. But all of this is assuming that it's too serious to be fixed with the obvious fixes. In any case, all this stuff should be handled by a qualified technician and won't be something you can fix on your own unless you have electronic component experience (read: you're comfortable with a soldering iron and thermal paste!). Ours switched itself off and there was a burning smell. It was something to do with the switch which we got fixed. But was advised that when not in use, we was to unplug it to avoid it setting on fire. But that was about four years ago. The other week it switched itself onto standby when it turned itself back on there was a noise as if something has hit the screen we thought it was the tube as there was no picture. So we decided to get a new one. My husband told me over the weekend that they are or they are thinking of charging for tipping old tv's.

Jenni disable your anto sleep fuction for the setup menu it may just be a malfuntion within the tv. it may just be because its over heating or too cold etc...
