Which LCD do i buy and will it be compatiable?
My dad wants to purchase a small under 20" LCD tv for his kitchen. We wehn shopping for one and we ran into a problem. Which will continue to work at the digital conversion and which will need a box. I know how to tell on larger sets but theres hardly any info on the smaller sets. From waht i think is true NTSC is the old analog standard, while ATSC is the new standard...right? Idk in just kinda of confused, is there any tell tale way to i can make sure the one he gets will be digital ready w/o buying a one that is HD ready?

I think "SONY" is the best.you know Bravia.many people said "SONY"is the best. A 20" lcd won't have a HD tuner but it will still work with all signal. To view HD content you will need a cable box. A 26" or larger lcd tv will likely have a built-in dual tuner (NTSC and ATSC). With a HD built-in tuner you can received HD broadcast without a cable box. ASK FOR AN "HD-READY" TV with a built-in ATSC tuner.
Of couse, since it IS a small TV....you'd be just as happy with an "HD-READY" with a built-in DIGITAL TUNER....
A DIGITAL TUNER gets the HD stations, but only displays a super sharp picture in low definition 480i signal rather than TRUE HD in 1080i.......
Did I confuse you even more? Don't worry, Digital HD was built for small TVs and HD-ATSC was built for 30 inch sets and larger....
Just ask for an HD-ready TV with HD tuner...that's all you need to ask for. As of right now I have not seen a 20 inch TV with an ATSC tuner. Its just not mandated yet, soon but not yet. So there really os no solution to your problem. You will just have to bite the bullet and get a tv with an NTSC tuner. Then when the signals convert to digital, before Feb 17 2009, you will just have to get a conversion box to attach to the tv. The TV will still work it will just need that box. and it should be under 50 bucks.
