27 inch jvc television. Great sound but no picture.?

I have a 27 inch jvc television that has great sound but no picture. I was first told that it had a line on the top that eventually moved to the center. When I got it home there was no picture at all. Is it a drastic problem or inexpensive to fix. Can I do anything to it?

You cannot do anything to fix this, no. If there was a line across the screen, but no other brightness, your vertical sweep circuit failed-not a really uncommon problem for any brand. If the set is in otherwise decent shape, don't run the set anymore, take it to a reputable shop and ask for an estimate. Call around first, tell the tech that you think the set suffered 'vertical collapse' and you need an accurate estimate. Then take it in to someone you feel comfortable with. Many shops will charge an 'estimate' or 'bench' fee for estimate work. As a former (23years) tv tech, I know. The tech usually has to nail down the problem before he can give an accurate estimate and has most of his time already wrapped up in it. Be prepared to give a go/no go answer when you get the estimate. The tech may be able to finish the job right then without buttoning it up and placing it out of the way while waiting for you to make a decision, only to have to open it back up, if you elect to have the repair done. If the problem was/is vertical collapse. parts are going to be the minor $ of the repair-the labor will be the biggest cost. Vertical circuits are similar to simple audio (sound) amplifier circuits and use similar IC's as their final stages-that's what most commonly goes haywire. Sounds like picture tube is gone..If you have a dvd player on game system ..connnect it ,switch to audio , video mode. To see if you have a picture. If not tube is gone...I'am sure you checked brightness, etc...Good luck The horizontal output transistor may be shorted..or the vertical output may have died. Both can be fixed by a TV tech..
