what is wrong with my phone?

i have 2 phones in my house: one standard, corded phone and one cordless phone. they both aren't working right now. i pick either one up and i get a "busy" tone. yet neither are "off the hook". what is wrong?

i have DSL through my phone service and obviously the internet is working..but my regular phone line isn't. Why?

any ideas? they are all plugged in ok..nothing different than yesterday..could it be the phone line outside?

I used to work for SBC. It sounds like they temporarily disconnected your service, usually for a late bill, not that it is necessarily the case. Anyway, the phone systems are so intricate, that they can cut your phone service, and still leave the DSL working. They clearly just forgot to turn off the DSL, so consider yourself lucky you still have it. Just call them from a different location to find out what the problem is. By the way, don't tell them you have your DSL running still, because if they have a good reason for disconnecting you, then you tell them the DSL is running, you'll probably get that cut off too.

To save time, your best bet is to contact the billing department, as any other department will transfer you around until you want to slit your wrists!

Try dialing a number and see if it goes through. If it does, then you have your phone company's voice mail. Mayb u didnt pay the bill Unplug the phones from the jacks and look into the jacks. Some times the spring loaded contact wires inside the jack become unseated and short out. That short can cause an off hook signal. If you use a very small screw driver you can reseat the spring loaded contacts wires to their proper position.
