Would a LANDLINE phone bought in England (and configured to work there) function in Canada?

Possiby not without a little simple modification.
UK phones use THREE wires, A, B and "ring" - the reasons date back to the days when bells rather than rings were common place and the system was designed to remove "bell tinkle" when someon was dialling with pulse dialling.
Anyway, back to the question:-
You need to connect the third wire to a 2u2 capacitor and then connect it to one of the other wires (trial and error I cannot recall which off hand)
If you do not do this, the phone can make and receive calls but the rings will probably NOT work.
The easiest way to do this for someone who does not wish to mess about with capacitors is to buy a "master socket" for the telephone and then wire the socket from terminal (2) and terminal (5) to the canadian phone pair. then plug the telephone into the master socket - it will then work perfectly.
