Why do they not make phones with a REN of zero?
Because of REN you can not have lots of phones on the same line. However I have adapted mine to REN zero so the phone is normaly not connected but lifting it connects it to the line to answer the phone. It does not ring of course but as long as at least one phone is ringing in the house you know you have a call.
Why do they not make basic phones like this so people can have as many extentions as they want.

Phones are made so that anyone can simply plug them in. If there was a phone that didn't ring, someone would try to install it as their only phone. Anyone who knows enough about phones to be able to use one with REN 0 can make their own simply by disconnecting the third wire. you can have as many phones as you want but when you go over the REN not all of them will ring but they will all work when you pick them up so in theroy you have accomplished nothing sorry to burst your bubble. Why on earth do you need loads of phones in your house? Although I'm not a BT engineer surely 4 phones in the house tops is adequate for anyone. Unless, of course, you live in a mansion...
How many phones would you like?
Graham Get a gigaset phone. 1 jack, 8 extensions. That's ok if you can hear the single phone ringing, you could have got off with a couple of cordless phones and kept one in your pocket, or you could have got a REN booster and raised your REN from 4 to 11 then all the phones would ring. I'm glad I don't live next door when you get a phone call!
