When calling American telephone numbers, is there a ringing tone at the caller's end?
I've been trying to contact somebody who I bought a book from on ebay in the US (im in the UK). They have stopped responding to emails so I have had to get their contact details to call them. When I do, there's a long, silent pause then a message says "Please hold while the Nextel subscriber you are trying to contact" the message is cut off by the person's voicemail message. What's happening?

Most of the time this means the phone is off or the person is out of range. The Nextel network can be trying to locate them and the message is a courtesy to you. If you don't hear ringing on the line then this is usually the case. I believe that the person still has the phone and has not disconnected service, but there are also some phones that allow you to preview the number calling before allowing the call to be answered. Yes, it's one long dial tone instead of the two tones we get when we ring someone local. their phone is off. when cell phones are off or the person is out of area (this normally only happens with sprint/ nextell) that message come on and it goes straight to voice mail. or they could be ignoring your calls. in which case. leave a message... because I always screen my phone calls. but yeah- normally cell phones ring when you call them. No, we just randomly pick up our phones and say "Hello?" It means that thier phone is turned off but still connected so keep trying,the person has to turn thier phone on sooner or later. Report them to ebay if they have not fulfilled their part of the contract. Hopefully you have also paid by paypal, and you are protected there as well. Give them bad feedback
