What type of phone line is best to run from outside box to 56K modem?

As itis just a regular phone service use regular phone wire you buy at walmarts or lowes. use a regular phone jack you also buy there, and use a cord which plugs into your moderm(on a dial up it should be a regular line as would fit a phone) and plugs into your computer.

I have dls and my service comes over the phone also. it uses the same everything a phone does, the same exact way. your computer should have a place to plug into.

The best ever wire is supposely "cat 5" which consists of two paired connections of 4. Yes and,place the computer as close to the outside box s is possible. that works. You only need 2 of the 4 wires when connecting the jack to the line. Current house phone wiring should be fine to run a 56K modem. sorry to say but Cat5 isnt the best I know were installing cat6, but if you are using dial up, its not gonna matter weather its cat5 or 6 and even if you are on ethernet or another highspeed server. The average user wont be able to tell a difference in Cat3, Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6.

As far the guage you wont tell a differnce. Unless you are planing to run it at least a few hundred feet. Then you might have to take in account resistance on the line and use the appropriate guage. As stated above, the shorter the distance the better your signal should be.

You should be fine with 24 gauge though.
