What is the best way to connect 2 phones to one line so that only one is active?

I have two phones and one phone lines. When a call comes in after 9pm, I would like to route the call to the phone in the office, but not the one in the bedroom. Is there a switch of some kind that can do this?

I am looking for an inexpensive solution.

I've never seen such a switch. I think you'd be better off spending a few bucks on a nice cordless phone system. Mine, a Uniden, has two handsets and allows me to set Do Not Disturb so none of the phones ring, or I can individually turn off the ringer to either of the two headsets or the base. We keep the one in the bedroom off so as not to wake up our baby in the next room. Also, it operates at the 5 GHZ frequency so that the range is great and we don't get interference from neighboring cell phones and wireless routers.

One gentleman above mentioned a PBX. There is actually a free open-source PBX called Asterisk (www.asterisk.org). However, it takes a bit of know-how to set it up so I don't think it's the easy solution you're looking for. Inexpensive is your problem here, I looked for a similar solution a while ago.

What you need is a switch called a PBX, which stands for Private Branch eXchange. These can do all the cool things office phones do (group hunt, group pick up etc) and will probably do what you want, but they cost a fortune.

Someone feel free to correct me, I wouldn't mind a cheap PBX for a UK (BT) home. Another option would be to turn the ringer off for the bedroom phone. Most modern phones have this feature. Does you bedroom phone have a button/slider that you can turn the ringer off with?
