What is the best way for a seperate fax machine and answering machine to both work on the same phone

KrautRock is right....I have it set up the same way!! I have a panasonic fax machine and it works fine with the answering machine. Set the fax machine to pick up after 5 rings. Set the answering machine to pick up after 3 rings. Usually if the answering machine picks up a fax call, the fax should intercept it. At least that is how the panasonic works. add distinctive ring service from your phone co..you get a additional phone "number" added to you existing service...you give the new "number" to the fax machine....set the fax to answer the distinctive ring service after 2 or 3 rings and set the answer mach to pick up after 4 or 5 rings..(the distinctive ring sounds like a quick ring,ring as in Europe..versus a steady longer ring here in the us)...i assume the your fax is able to be set to "answer distinctive ringing service" and your phone service provider offers that service...all missed incoming voice calls will be ignored by fax as it has been set to distinctive ring and the distinctive ring will be received by the fax after 2 rings before the answer machine set to 4 or 5 rings picks up the call Set the machines to respond after so many rings. There are line splitters that allow you to hook up a phone and ansering macine to one plug,a fax machine in another and a computer in the third plug and then plug the splitter into the single phone line plug.
