Yes, typically you can. You will need to contact your local phone company and tell them that you want a "Transfer of Authority" form for your account. Your son will most likely need to sign an agreement for any and all charges that are currently on the account and, if he has never had phone service in his name before, he may be required to pay a small deposit or provide a credit statement.

If the account is past due, you or your son will typically be required to bring the account to current. If you can't do that all at once, you can request a payment arrangment, but services can be limited to basic only (no features, no toll) until the account is brought up to current. you should be able to. they might run a credit check on him to make sure but when you try to cancel service they usually ask if you have someone to take over the account so it should work. You have to have it current before you can transfer it. They won't do anything for you until you don't owe anything. Sorry!! I don't want to sound like a jerk, assuming things, but a bf of mine had his credit ruined by his mother with utility bills before he even turned 18. It was basically like a stolen identity. She knew all of his info and had utilities put under his name and then defaulted on them. She had to do alot of lying to accomplish it because the companies are not unwise to the ploy. It helped that he had a different last name, but she had to pretend to move and pretend to be the new tenant. So, yeah it can be done. But you should ask whether it is ethical or not. The phone company isn't the only one in line to get screwed.
