Can I replace NiCd battery with NiMH in cordless phone?

I have a GE 900 MHz 2-6920R. It has a NiCd battery that is near-dead -- maybe 20 minute talk time now. Would like to replace with NiMH for longer battery life and better for environment. But we like the phone and don't want to ruin it. Will this work?

Hey, here's a little trick I figured out. Now I'm sure plenty of safety freaks out there will condemn me on this, but here it is anyway.

In a pinch? Don't have any more AA or AAA batteries for your T.V. remote? Just throw your alkaline batteries in your NiCd charger for 6-8 minutes. If you have a lacadazacle attitude then DON'T!! There I said it- all you 'by the book folks'.

T.V. remotes take almost zero power anyway. So all you're doing is just getting a little more charge on those old alkalines. DON'T be a fool and try to fully charge them. You are only going to either burn up your charger, or ... let ME say it alright?-,burn the house down...

this is just to get you by until you can remember to get a new set of batteries from the store.

Hey, whatever happened to the guy who made the alkaline charger? Did someone shut him down because it cut into their profits? Ah' life sucks that way sometimes, uh'?

P.S. you should run NiCd's all the way dead occasionally and be sure there is a good connection on the base-to-phone, you know the pencil erasure trick? well, be sure you don't bend the contacts in on the base- this will cause bad contact.
