what's the difference between an mp3 and ipod??

An mp3 is a type of music file, and an iPod is the actual device that plays the mp3s. Basically there is no difference because to have an mp3 u have to have an ipod. The ipod is called an mp3 player. No big difference. Ipod is an mp3 player its just people get it confused to think Ipod is different from a mp3 player. Its just what apple named theirs. Why the confusion cause so many people have one that it has so many accesories and and its widely used so people think its just its own player. When I worked at walmart people would point at other mp3 players and call it ipod. Its just how things get confused by people. Its like calling the xbox the ps2 since ps2 it was better and people had more of it. a non pedantic answer is the the fact that alot of mp3 players have "flash" memory, you can get up to about 1GB or put memory cards in to get more space. iPods (as well as some other mp3 players) have a hard drive inside them so you can store like 50,000 songs or something, along with videos and photos. The main point is an iPod Is an mp3 player but it's just a name, like a Zen or whatever. iPods are also the best out there. There isn't a difference. An Ipod IS an mp3 player. Ipods are just more expensive and can do more stuff than your average mp3 player. If all you want is music stick to the mp3 player it's cheaper and more versital. If you want to watch movies on a 2" screen buy an Ipod (why anyone would want to do that and pay for the privilege is beyond me).

If you have an Ipod you have to use the software that came with it to download music. If you have an mp3 player often you don't need any special software to download music to it. ipods play mp3's and songs encoded specifically to play on just ipods. that is why you have to convert songs bought from the ipod store before you can say share them.
