In other words it is already inside your hardware and you can't modify it without having the source code. For example: Creative (MP3 player company) released a firmware update that removed some components off the player. You cannot do that with a new software installation, you need to work on the source code internally hence the firmware. Firmware is the software that runs your device chips. It can't be changed without "flashing" the system. A computer program or software stored permanently in PROM or ROM or semi-permanently in EPROM and can be updated by an end user.
