why are there dvd recorders that will copy a dvd movie and some that don't?
the movie is yours , but you can't make a copy of it? some machines will.

For computers, it depends on the software that you're using to remove the copy protection, because it should always work, as long as the disc is in good condtion.
What most consumers don't realize is that the burning programs that come preinstalled on their computers (Roxio, Nero, Recordnow, etc) cannot burn DVD movies because they have to abide by copyright laws.
But, thank God, there are some ingenius programmers out there that make free programs to copy DVD movies.

For TV DVD Recorders, it's almost impossible and not worth the time to try and copy to another DVD, because there are several hardware/software protections to scramble the content and prevent it from copying and looking the same.

Technically: The DVDs come with copy protection like Macrovision which will tell the DVD recorder that the DVD may not be copied. Most major brand DVD recorders are required to comply with the copy protection and they will not let you copy those DVDs.
