This is one of the best philosophical questions I've ever read.
I was going to write some jokey response but, hmm, now you have me thinking. If it worked, it could only turn-off the tv. It couldn't turn the tv back on. At the same time, I don't think the clapping sounds from the commercial are sufficient to turn-off the tv (in this case).
I think that recorded claps won't do it. The clapping HAS to be generated within the actual space in which the device is placed, because those vibrations are what activate the device.
