Will satellite radios such as those available in the US (on subscription) work in the UK?

There are two obstacles that in practice mean "no".

First, in order for the receiver to work, the company must enter its serial number into their computer system and broadcast an activation code via the satellite system (this also allows them to shut off your satellite service if you don't pay them).

The company will only do this by setting up an account for you, and that account MUST have a USA mailing address.

Second, the receiver's antenna needs a direct line-of-sight view to a satellite. XM uses geostationary satellites at longitude 85W and further west; I believe the signal is also "aimed" somewhat at the continental US. Thus, the XM satellite signal should not be present in the UK.

Sirius uses a set of 3 satellites in lower, elliptical orbits designed so that each satellite is visible from the US for 16 hours per day. While these will occasionally pass over the UK, each will only be visible there for a shorter period of time because of the shape of its orbit. Thus, while some Sirius signal coverage should be available in the UK, it will be limited and subject to frequent interruptions.
