NO Blue ray disks need a blue ray player and HDdvd disks need an HDdvd player.
OR I believe someone is comming out with a combo player that will play both formats. In most cases, no. BluRay and HD-DVD use such tiny peaks and valleys in the media that they can only be read by a blue laser. To exaggerate the point, think of trying to play a vinyl record with a marble. Nothing intelligible of any quality would come out of it.
The exception is new hybrid DVD's that have been recently developed. They have HD-DVD on one side and regular DVD on the other. I've also read about a multilayer format that could play in BluRay, HD-DVD and regular DVD. These special discs are the only exceptions and would play in normal DVD quality in a normal DVD player. i agree. also the hddvd uses a green laser and the bluray uses a blue (hence the name bluray). they are different entirely.
