Why is there a spark when I unplug an appliance?

a little short-circuit It is a slight arc, and that is because the appliance is still drawing power. If you turn it off first, it won't arc Well Jack, that's because you are pulling so much current through the cable at the time you unplug, that there is sufficient energy for the electricity to jump the air gap - (like in a car spark plug).
Switch off the appliance first, then unplug - problem solved. Look up Lenz's Law - that will explain... Incidentally, you should always (where possible) switch off at the supply socket before unplugging any item of electrical apparatus - especially if the devices are what are known as 'inductive loads' e.g., motors. Usually if the appliance is off (really off) there is no spark, The spark may or may not show up in some appliances depending on the slope of the electricity coming into the unit from the power outlet.
Some appliances such as newer televisions, computers, radios air conditioners, etc. typically devices with remote controls. are never really off. Even with the power light off there is still something inside that is using electricity. otherwise the remote wouldn't work.
The spark comes from that power being used, and is nothing to worry about.
