Why is my DVD player acting up?
I purchased my dvd player not 2 long ago (2 late 2 exchange) and everytime i try to play a DVD is says [bAd] or incorrect Disc. These are new DVDs (purchased) not used or rented. Does it need to be cleaned? or is it just a p.o.s. dvd player? My laptop dvd player works fine, ps2 is decent. Thank you

It might need to be cleaned. Sometimes the lens gets something on it (dust or hair) and the laser can't do the right stuff. You can buy a cleaning DVD from most electronics stores and many video stores. Even if it doesn't help, it's a good investment because you should clean your DVD player periodically.
If cleaning doesn't help, take it to a repair shop and get an estimate for fixing it. If it got bumped or knocked around a bit, the laser might be out of focus and that's a cheap fix. Anything equal to or more expensive than buying a new DVD player probably isn't worth the fix. You can sell it broken to someone who fixes their own electronics. If the DVD can be played on your computer, then the problem is not with the DVD. This technology is changing so fast, it really depends on how old your player is. Some DVDs are encoded in such a way that they just won't play on anything much older than a year, if that. I bought the complete set of the Twilight Zone at Costco and then returned it because the picture kept breaking up. Then I realized what was going on. I bought a new player for $90, and put the old one down in the basement. Older DVDs work fine downstairs, and the new ones play great on the new player.
