Why is hold music so bad?

I've been on hold for 33 minutes... aaaaargh!!!

I think it is a test to determine just how badly you want to talk to someone. Have you noticed that they play the same sort of music in malls or department stores where teenagers tend to hang out. This is to drive them away, same thing when you are on hold - they want you to leave voluntarily.

I agree Well, apart from questions of taste [elevator music is not my favorite genre], it is so bad because most music does not go over well on a phone - not enough technology to process the data, so even music that is famous for being great stuff sounds horrid and irritating. Yes I know what you mean and it is the cheesiest music that makes you want to sing to it. Worst of all being on hold is the worst when you got to go to the washroom. Do you ever notice that you hand gets sore holding the receiver or if you have a speaker phone you are 10 ft away when they come back on? Yes we already spend a great deal in line ups with sad and cheesy people so that's a lot of time in our lives waisted on sad times. Hope you have a great day. Hold music is usually not too appealing to certain individuals because they are usually designed to appeal to a broad audience without catering to any particular one. For example, it is extremely rare to have hold music that is "Rap" or "Country" because that would be too narrow of an audience. Yet you would often find hold music that is "jazzy" particularly due to the lack of lyrics and smooth sound which is sure to not offend anyone although it may not be appealing to a section of the population. Hold music is like plain oatmeal. It is designed to be tolerated by the most amount of people for the longest period of time.
