Why don't water and electric meters have an embedded chip that can send readings to the company
It would be more accurate and meter readers could verify the readings manually a few times a year.

The Wireless Meter Reader is an unlicensed transponder for gas, water, and electric meter reading applications. The transponder is part of a remote meter reading system that monitors utility meters. The transponder is a low power device that will interface to several different manufacturers' utility meters.
In a typical application, the transponder collects usage data and stores it in preparation for interrogation. Usage information is then retrieved with a radio frequency communication link, and the transponder responds with a signal containing usage information.
The design incorporates a customized over-the-air protocol and has a proprietary sigma-delta and AFC scheme for low cost and high frequency stability without a PLL.
The Wireless Meter Reader has a real-time clock generated by the microcontroller, and the ability to store the last 30 days of utility usage. A low quiescent current microcontroller and regulator offers superior sleep mode current consumption that translates into a battery life of 16 years. They actualy do exist and here in Quebec ,Canada , they're often installed on new homes only .IT would be too expensive to replace all units all at same time so it'll be a progressive replacement thru many years . I think they do. I called my electric company recently and they told me the don't send someone to read the meters anymore. The information is uploaded straight from the meters to the electric company. I don't know about the water since I'm on a well. Actually there are some new ones in use in California that not only report your useage but can be controlled by the electric company as part of a program to reduce black out by reducing power consumption in homes and businesses that sign up for the new meter. Sounds like it's just a matter of time. After all, this is just the start of the 21st century. That's kinda like asking why the Wright Bros didn't come up with a monoplane. It just took a little time, that's all.
