Why did old VHS tapes end with that annoying screech that wakes you up when you've fallen asleep

When they make the tapes, they have a big reel of tape and record maybe a couple hundred copies on that reel, using a high-speed copy machine, and put the special tones between each copy. Then they load the already recorded reel onto another machine that "listens" for the tones, cuts the tape at that point, and packs it into a VCR cassette. Who cares, get with the times old man, get a D V D player..... :)
