There are B batteries, and even A batteries, but virtually no one ever makes them these days. The letters are part of a standard for "single-cell" batteries devised by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) starting back in the 1920s. Today the standard sizes range from AAAA to G, and others (such as J and N). It's just that AAA, AA, C, and D were the only alphabetic sizes that became commercially popular. (The others haven't completely disappeared, though. If you open up a 6-volt lantern battery, you'll find a bunch of F cells.)
