Why are rechargeable batteries only rated at 1.25 volts?
The manufacturer of my rechargebles claim they will work in any device that accepts aa aaa c d etc. I came to an impasse with my Accu-Rite remote rain guage. It requires 1.5 volt alkaline and rechargeables will not reach its threshold for performance. Every other device: Flash lights, lanterns, remote temp and humidity guages, have accepted and worked well with rechargeables. Thanks.

The chemical reaction in recharagle batteries produces 1.25 volts. Most devices can handle the lower voltage and the benifit is that the batteries are recharable. In your case, the 1.5 volts per cell is needed for the water sensor to work properly. sorry lady im out of money maybe 2marrow night NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries only holding a 1.2 volt charge makes them virtually useless in most applications. It's like inviting the one legged man to a butt-kicking contest.
The newer generation of batteries, like Nickel Hydride or Lithium Ion batteries, types that are in computer laptops, outperform past rechargeable by far.
I think the battery industry better wise and stop filling up our landfills with disposables, and go strictly recahargeable as soon as they can.
