Why are only 220 volt dryers used in homes?
I recently leased an apartment and when I tried to hookup the dryer I found wrong plug for dryer hookup. The plug wasn't 220 volts. My question is why are only 220 volt dryers used only? What can I do to make my 220 volt dryer work with a standard socket? Can it be done? Is it legal? My landlord says that his contractor built all the homes like this (without 220v hookup) and no one has filed a complaint. Please help.

all dryers are 220 volt because they draw half the amps. of 110 volt devices plus they require 220v because one hot leg runs the drum and the other hot leg runs the heater portion. no 110v dryers. no its not illegal. all you need is a different socket for your dryer. and make sure that the socket is wired the same as your dryer. 110v, 110v, neutral.

Probably because if you used only a 110V circuit, it would take way too many amps to generate the power needed for a dryer. You would need a transformer to use the 110V outlet, but I wouldn't mess with it.
