Perhaps more important than the brand is the TYPE of rechargeable battery. Nickle Cadmium (NiCads) are among the most widely available and have been around for a long time. They deliver a lot of current when needed and can be recharged many times. Their big downside is that they need to be completely discharged before recharging and then completely recharged or their capacity will diminish greatly over time. They "remember" how much they were charged and have a tendency to not charge more than that the next time.
The next type is Nickle Metal Hydride (NMHd). These have similar characteristics to NiCads but have less of a "memory" problem with the diminishing recharging capacity.
The latest, and probably the best are Lithium rechargables, which do not have the "memory" problems, and have a very high energy density (this means more juice in the same size battery). Another nice feature of Lithium batteries is they have a longer shelf life than the other two types. This means that if you charge them up and put them in a flashlight and don't use it for 6 months, they will still be charged. NiCads would be dead (even though you never used them).

Get batteries with at least 2500 mAHr of energy storage. You may find that some batteries and chargers can recharge in as little as 15 minutes, but they might cost more and probably won't recharge as many times.
If you really don't need the fast recharge, I wouldn't bother with it.
Also, note that NiMH batteries have a little lower voltage than alkaline cells. For devices like digital cameras this is OK (NiMH works great here), but it is possible that some devices should have real alkaline AA batteries. sony is the best one... they are producing 1700/2300/2500/3000 mAh....
