why is it that car stereos can pick up more stations and do so more clearly than expensive home syst
I've found that automobile audio systems (cheap or exspensive) tend to pick up more stations (particularly AM stations) with less distortion than my home systems and this bugs me. I could be listening to a station on my car's radio in the garage and then go inside the house where I'm not able to get the same station from a multi-thousand dolar soround sound set up, and every one else I've asked seems to have the same experience.

Your car stereo has an antenna - if you want to try - disconnect the antenna and see how much you car picks up.
Many people with homes systems do not bother to hook up an antenna. The ones that come with the stereo are weak and are not really designed to pick up many signals through the walls and electrical systems in the home. Try to hook up an external antenna and see how many channels you get then. You will notice a difference.
