It really depends what you want from your cell phone service. To tell you my personal experience, I live on hills in a Los Angeles sub-urban neighborhood and I've used Sprint, Cingular, T-Mobile, and Verizon. You will probably find the same in NYC as well. Cingular and T-mobile had the worst reception. Calls get disconnected on average once every 20 minutes. Sprint has weak reception in my neighborhood but has clear calls and few disconnects. Sprint also have very good customer service. Verizon Wireless is the most expensive but by far the best in quality, connection, and reliability.
For students who want fad phones and low priced plans, I would recommend Cingular or T-Mobile. They also offer the best and trendest phones. Note that the trade-off is connection quality.
