This is the only answer you need, and it's hard for me to believe that hardly anyone knows this.
IF you are not getting the coverage expected, YOU may cancel your contract at anytime without paying anything to your current provider for "breach of contract". In fact they are then breaching the contract, not you.
All you have to tell them (if it is true of course) is that you cannot use the phone from areas where you expect to be or have been, NO COVERAGE or DROPPED CALLS, and you are FORCED to go to another provider.
By FCC regulations they have to let you out of the contract without a cancellation fee. This way you do not even have to ask your new provider if they will pay for anything.
Good luck with your new provider. It's worth trying... but my experience is that unless you have some unusual amount of pull with the company (like, say, you date the branch manager :-D ), they won't budge if you've only got one phone. I manage my company's cell phone account and despite having 22 cell phones, our old provider basically gave us nothing.
On the flip side, our new provider (that we went to a month ago) gave us a good chunk of change to switch over... they wanted our business and as a result were willing to go after it. It didn't equal the termination fee, but it definitely helped! (I believe they paid about 75% of the total termination fees or so.) Keep in mind that we were a fairly large account and obviously a lot of potential $ for the new provider if they did what was necessary to seal the deal.
Basically, try to use your leverage as a potential customer as a bargaining chip. It's not easy and not very probable, but it IS possible. Best of luck!! I would look at the contract and see if it has a trial period or is pro-rated. I don't think any provider would pay a $200 cancellation fee and give you a new phone.
