Pretty vague question ... but I'll try. CD's and DVD's are similar to vinyl records with a few differences. These two media forms are digital rather than analog, so they don't reproduce sound as accurately as an LP. Otherwise it's the same principal. A DVD contains a very thin aluminium foil. On this foil, in a spiral pattern, is a series of literally millions of disrupted segments of aluminum. When the laser hits one of these segments, the light doesn't bounce back, and it reads a '0'. If the light hits a smooth segment, the light comes back and it reads a '1'. This binary code is then decoded into audio. It's the same in terms of the mechanism with a CD, but different in laser wavelength.
