will a surge protector type powerboard stop my av receiver dropping out?
When i bought my av receiver (pioneer vsx-d511) i never suffered sound drop outs. Now, when a clothes drier kicks on, or a fridge compresser etc, the sound drops out for a second. Will a surge protector powerboard prevent this, or is it a power drop causing the problems, requiring a ups. powerboard cheap, ups expensive. Psychiatric bills resultant from sound drop outs? Priceless. I'm a regular answerer in this section, now i need help.

A surge protector won't do it. Sounds like the power is dropping. A big "power conditioner" with alot of capacitance might do the trick. Pricey though...:(
Since something seems to have changed... I might try cleaning the plug for the receiver with contact cleaner. Maybe replace the outlet it plugs into (about $1.00 and you never know...) Does your electrical system use fuses? A new one may help. Electrical connection to your house may be going bad. No matter what the problem is - always try the cheap things first. Buy a surge protector power board and see what happens.
There are too many variables in this situation to be answered by anyone here. A power conditioner with a decent amount of capitacnce will do the trick, it will also protect your electronics and filer noise which can give picture anamolies. A panamax model 5100 or 5300 will do the trick. Both are a little pricey at 200-400 but are a sound product. getting a line conditioner that is subpar will cost you about 100 but may not always stop the voltage dip. I new "surge protector/ powerboard" will do nothing but waste you $10. Sounds like you are losing electrical power and your electrical circuit is being overloaded, a power surge protector will not help your problem. Try connecting your receiver on a different electrical outlet if possible. The other thing you could do is not run everything one the same circuit or not use you receiver when the dryer is operating. What you really need is to upgrade your electrical power or add more outlets. Nothing a novice should fool around with.
