I'm sure that you've checked the cleanliness of the dvd your trying to play? They can be washed up and dried with a soft lint free cloth if very dirty, greasy or random "stuff".
If it's the machine, it might be as simple as it may need the lasar cleaning. I believe you can get a kit in the same way you used to be able to get head cleaners for vids & tapes. You need one of these as the lasar thingy (technical term ! LOL) is impossible to get at.

It could have a software problem,i had a Phillips dvd recorder and after only two years of minimal use it started wiping previously recorded disks on its own,i contacted Phillips and there response was very poor (they didn't give a toss)so i now have a Sony,a far superior machine and cheaper. because its a rubbish unit buy a toshiba I had a Philip's DVD recorder as well and i had a fair bit of trouble with it,if i was you id get rid of it and have a Sony one,that's what i did,if it isn't that old take it back the shop and ask them to exchange it for a Sony one.I've never had any problems with my Sony.its about 3 years old. It could have a scratch on it so take it out blow on it and rub it against your shirt. I hate to say this but you have probably burnt up a transformer by plugging it in wrong while it's hooked up...
