Does it also do this after you mute the system, then unmute the system? If you're hearing a pop it should be feint, not like your drivers are going to explode.
If it's not feint... there's problems... this is also assuming you don't have your volume levels really high, and what you're hearing is 10% distortion. Does the problem go away at lower output levels?
Kinks in cables, are not likely to affect sound reproduction on that level in only a single mode. A loose, frayed, or broken intermittent connection should be causing distortion consistently, unless wiggled. Coiling them might cause phasing issues as you created an inductor, or something else along those lines, but then it should be present in all modes, not just one, if it's a potential cable issue. It sounds like the receiver is having problems in that mode. You might want to check your wires as well as that they could have a kink in them and may need to be replaced. Option #1 is more likely however if it's only happening in Dolby Pro Logic II.
Have an experienced technician diagnose the problem.
