when you have a dvd player& cable box both w/ hdmi imput what is the best surr/sound solution?
i want to only use hdmi with cable box and dvd with my surround sound reciever, is this possible?

Assuming your TV has 2 HDMI inputs & a optical audio output, then I would plug them both to the TV via HDMI cable. Then use an optical audio cable from the TV to your receiver. My brother has this setup. If you want you can get a better receiver with hdmi pass thru but if you don't this solution will work, but you will need another cable. If your dvd player has optical audio out and your receiver has optical audio in then buy an optical wire for the sound could go directly to the receiver and use the hdmi cable to the tv. Thats how my bro has his setup and it works flawlessly. Usually, these AMP's were just to provide power and amplify speakers. Now, all audio AND video should be run through the receiver. You need an audio/video receiver (AVR). This device takes the inputs from all of your various devices - cable box, dvd player, video game systems, etc. - and lets you switch among them. Check out the newer Denon AVR units. They have multiple HDMI inputs. I have used a Denon AVR for several years, though it is from the time before HDMI was popular, and it is a fine unit. The HDMI cable hooks up from the back of your TV to the back of your cable box. The HDMI ( High Definition Multimedia Interface) increases the quality of the audio and your video, so, if you are playing a DVD, the picture & sound will be better. And if you are just playing CDs, the sound will be better. The HDMI being put where I said will not hurt the sound from whatever you are playing.
