It's the best connection for HDTVs. Absolutely neccessary for connecting hd-dvd players to an HDTV and pretty much neccessary to connect an upscaling dvd player to an HDTV. Otherwise, you might as well just get regular cable and a regular dvd player, because you might have an HDTV, but if you're not using the right cable to carry the signal, then you losing "bytes" in the connection and the picture won't look as good. (The other option is to avoid dvd players and cable boxes and just connect the direct hd signal from the coax right to the HDTV, but then you have to make sure your HDTV has an HD tuner, also called a ATSC tuner.)
It carries the uncompressed audio and video in one cable so you don't have multiple cables between the dvd player and the tv. And since it's uncompressed, it takes the original source and carries it to the TV in the best way possible. Some cable boxes (and satellite boxes) have hdmi connections and some don't, and most HDTVs are starting to have them. So obviously, the dvd player and/or the cable box must have an "hdmi output jack" and the HDTV must have an "hdmi input jack" in order to need an hdmi cable. Therefore, if you want to have the best connections from your dvd player and your cable/satellite box to your HDTV, you need the HDTV to have 2 hdmi inputs, one for the cable and one for the dvd player.
Don't get sucked into buying a $75 cable, they are a complete waste of money. Monster cables is the biggest ripoff of all time. They use the same sort of raw materials that cheaper cables do and there is no difference, many tests have shown this.
