what is the difference between componet and composite connections?

i have a PVR with composite output and I'm looking at getting a new TV which has component input, is this just a different name or is it a different format?

Answer:

randombus... has them backwards but everything else is right

Think of the video signal, if it's all in one then it is composite, that is the yellow, with red and white being audio. Total of 3 connections

Component, think of the video being broken down in to color components, where you have Red, Blue, Green or Red, Blue, Yellow depending on the manufacturer. Then a Red and white for audio, total of 5 connections

component is by far better, up to HDTV quality. A tv with component inputs will also have composite inputs too so you'll be ok. Component is way better, take a look at this site.

http://www.bellaonline.com/articlesp/art... Composite and component both have three leads, but...

Component out is Red, White + Yellow, Red and White being the audio, yellow being the video signal. This sort of video connection is the lowest quality available.

Composite leads are three different leads again, only they carry the separate Red, Green and Blue video signals which is the three signals a TV uses to create a picture. This offers the very best analogue picture quality. However, these leads only carry video and so no audio. (To get audio you would use the component Red and White audio connections).

SCART leads carry all of these signals. Just remember to set your equipment up to send/receive the correct signal. hogie0101 is right, I do have them the wrong way round, why do they have such similar names!? I always confuse myself on that point. component is far superior. my tv has component inputs and i use them wiv fantastic results. the pictire is sooo crisp and colourful
