_ This is not as simple as it initially appears. There are really about 3 different types of rear projection televisions: 1) CRT, 2) DLP, 3) LCD. As a note, there are also other LCD based derivatives such as LCos, SXRD, DiLA. The CRT uses the same technology as your old tube television, and should last as long as you would ever want it (no bulbs to replace). CRTs are very heavy and big though, and are prone to screen burn-in, meaning a static image, if left on the screen for long periods of time may be burnt into the screen. DLP and LCD (and its derivatives) are all based on reflecting light off of a small imaging surface. Thes televisions are quite thin and much lighter than CRT. With this type of television you will have to replace the bulb at about 3000 (it varies by television model) hours or so; bulbs can be quite expensive. If you feel you made the wrong choice, just look at total cost of ownership, the rear projection television will cost less than half of the equivalent plasma television, meaning you could buy a bunch of bulbs and still come out ahead. Put your mind at ease as I think that you and your husband made a good choice. There are many types of TV's to choose from now a days but value wise there is nothing better than a Projection TV. I'm not sure what type you got but many of the Projection TV's like the DLP's (Digital Light Projectors) are excellent TV's whose pictures are amazing. The 1080p's have amazing clarity and color brillance. In regards to the bulb's they do go out after several years which is subjective depending on how many hours of tv you watch. For the average viewer, the bulb should last you over 5 years. The bulbs are around $200.00 and if you were to tack that price onto what you paid for the TV it's still cheaper than a plasma TV of comprable price. Furthermore, if plasmas also consume more energy and they gases the support the plasma new to be refurbished as well. Hiring a technician to do this is about $500.00 and to do oneself, a pump needs to be purchased for $100.00. From a financial point of view, a projection TV makes much more sense and the picture quality is better as there are very few 1080p plasmas while many of the projection TV's now offer 1080p. The main advantage of a plasma is the ability to place it on a wall. However, most people place it on a stand...what's the point.
