what is a dtv receiver ?

i am trying to hook up a home theater sytem to my tv and i dont know what refers to a home theater system a dtv receiver or an audio receiver.....thanks

A DTV receiver is a digital television receiver which can receive off-the-air digital broadcasts. Most DTV receivers will also receive HDTV signal (a variety of DTV). An audio receiver, usually called an A/V receiver is designed to be a main audio amp and signal processor, as will as a device that can accept several audio and video inputs from different soursce (DTV receiver, DVD player, etc.) and allow you to select which one is shown on the TV. One important function of an A/V receiver is to generate surround-sound. It will do this from the Dolby Pro-Logic signals on analog stereo, or will accept digital audio such as Dolby Digital or DTS, and decode this also. The A/V receiver will have outputs for the speakers you need for a full home theater (front L and R, center, rear L and R, and maybe more). Most do not have ouputs for a subwoofer speaker only, but have a subwoofer output that can be used with a powered subwoofer.
