_ A digital audio encoding system from Dolby used in movie and home theaters. It is a type of surround sound format. The 5.1 refers to how many speakers you have set up. There are 5 satellites. Usually two in front on the left and right of the television, two behind the viewer on the left and right, and one centered over the TV (used mostly for dialog). The .1 refers to one sub woofer (used for the bass or Low Frequency and it creates the rumbling sometimes felt when watching a movie with a lot of explosions). The Ch means channel, so it "translated" to [5 discrete audio channels plus one for bass]. Hope that helps 5.1 channel means , movie or music sound track recorded in 6 channel format. Left, right channel, center channel, 2 rear channel and a low frequency effect channel call the subwoofer channel which is the .1 channel.
