When you have a digital source, rather than having that source convert it to analog to send to your receiver, in order to minimize distortion and signal degradation, the optical port can keep the audio in digital format. Most get this from DVD players to utilize Dolby Digital surround sound or DTS, but other sources could be a digital cable box, a satellite TV receiver, a satellite radio receiver or an HDTV.
