The single most important thing to look at is the THD rating at 20 Hz - 20 KHz.
You should buy a receiver, or amplifier that is rated 0.05% THD @ 20Hz - 20 KHz or lower. Do not buy anything rated 0.1% THD @ 20 Hz - 20 KHz or higher.
Don't worry about the wattage output, there isn't enough difference between surround sound receivers wattage output to be concerned with how many watts it's rated at. There is so little difference between a 100 watts RMS @ 20 Hz - 20 KHz per channel amplifier & a 200 watts RMS @ 20 Hz - 20 KHz per channel amplifier, the difference in how loud your speakers will sound between the two is negligible.
So just pick one that has a good THD rating & has the features you want.
As far as which TV to use, I can't be of any use there, because I prefer a console TV in a nicely detailed oak cabinet over modern style TVs.

hogie0101 does bring up a good point, wireless speakers are crap. You should look for the inputs it has. Such as if you have a High Definition tv then having an HDMI input in your home theatre system is a must! Because connecting the system with an HDMI cable to you tv will provide you with excellent video quality for you dvd's. If your system is only for sound then make sure it has an optical input which will provide you with the best sound quality. Other than that make sure its not a no name brand like prima and it should have 800-100 watts. Another thing you can do is go to a place such as bestbuy, futureshop, soundsaround or any other electronic store and make sure you ask them all the questions you have and you get the right system for you. pony up the cash for some real equipment or don't waste your money. Yes with "wires", it's 1000 times better. not the size of the equipment BUT you should really buy separate audio/video receiver, multi players and speakers. Invest in a good set of speakers cables. All these really gives you the extra oomph for the audio! now for the video, go for the brands which has the highest lines resolutions (such as high definition 1080) and comes with 2 or more HDMI inputs.
