what digital output should I use when connecting a DVD player to a A/V receiver with Dolby digital?

If you don't have an HDMI connection, use the digital coaxial connection. It's either an orange or black RCA jack.

_ Connect the DVD player to the receiver via optical digital audio or HDMI for best sound quality. coaxial or optical both will work optical is better though. either digital coax or optical will give the receiver the ability to decode the surround signals from the dvd player - dont forget to tell the DVD to send its out put to the digital out (most are default on) and to tell yoru received that it will receive digital input.

Froma sound quality point of view , with short runs (6ft or less) either digital coax or optical perform the same - remember both are sending digital signals. go according to the list.

depends on your receiver, if it support HDMI then go for HDMI. else use optical or coxial.avoid using Analog(which is the red and white rca). Assuming you don't have HDMI...Optical is the way to go. BUT...

You want a GLASS optical cable. Depending on the resolution of your system, this can be a substantial upgrade sonically vs. the normal plastic optical cable. Check E-bay...plenty of Glass Toslink for sale there.
