should i buy Sony STR-DG600 or STR-DG800 receiver?
why would i Pay $100 more for not a whole lot of extras? Help me decide. For now i will be using it in my small room with 5.1 speakers. but later on will probably move to a bigger room and possibly upgrade to 7.1 speakers

First off, I cannot recommend a standard Sony receiver.
Only Sony's ES models may be worth considering over
another brand. Just my 2￠ on that.
Regarding your question, go with a good 7.1 receiver
and you don't need to spend a lot of money for either
room and you should be set. If you are sold on the 2
Sony receivers, the 600 should be plenty enough.
The Sony STR-DG600 is a 7.1 surround receiver.
For the price range you're considering, here's what I
would recommend that would give you significantly
better performance.

Sony receivers are not really that good. However, for what my response is worth, the STR-DG800 has a dedicated phono input for turntables. That's very crucial if you have a turntable and are still playing vinyl LPs every so often. I can't really say that room size and how many channels that you are running is a real issue in the decision.
