Woman can't wire her entertainment center!?
This is driving me crazy!! I have a dvr a dvd/vcr combo a reciever with 5 speakers a subwoofer and a tv. I cant get the surround sound to work. Right now I am using yellow and white cables from the tv to the receiver and from the vcr to the receiver, why wont this work.

Without having exactly what I am working with I cannot give you specific answers to your problem, but here goes.
Does your DVD/VHS combo have any digital connections(Optical/Coaxial), if so I would use this connection first.
Assuming you don't, your current connection is incorrect, you should be using at least three wires for your connection, yellow , white and red.
In your set up for your receiver did you tell your receiver that you are using analog connections?
Did you tell your DVD player you are using analog connections?
Did your tell your player to use PCM and not bitrate or digital?
Did you tell your receiver to play DVDs in surround sound and not stereo? Find a teenager to do it for you! :-))
Seriously. I always get my sister's kids to do stuff like that. If you don't have any kids around, do your neighbors?

the R & L and VIDEO connected on the INPUT of your
receiver and the OUTPUT of your DVD/VCR and TV.
Check your receiver's surround mode. Make sure you
have your receiver set on 5.1 surround. It could be on
