Will universal remote work on digital cable box?
My cousin has digital cable and they dropped their remote control in water and now it doesn't work. The cable company told them that it would cost $20-$50 just to replace the remote control. Does anyone know if a universal remote of some kind would work with it? The cable company says no, but they want her to buy their remote.

Universal remotes aren't exactly universal. I have 4 cheap ones ranging in price from 8 to 15 dollars. The problem is I have four of them and not just one. They all have the code for this component and not that one. A good universal remote will cost just as much to replace the remote for the cable box. My advice is to pull the circuit board that was dropped in the water and clean it with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. Or you could buy a u-remote for under the 20 dollars and take a chance. If the codes on the u-remote don't work, there usually is a number somewhere in the users manual that you can call to get a code...maybe. Yes. I use the Logitec Harmony remote. Works perfectly. You can program it for any operation. its says UNiVERSERAL for a reason
