Will the hd-dvd player movies not have the black bars on my hi-def TV?

I have a new plasma and am looking into the xbox 360 hd-dvd player. Will the movies have the black wide-screen bars on them? I know basically every HDTV is in 16:9 so will the movie be that way also.

Yes. There are a few different types of widescreen movies unfortunately, and depending on the movie will depend on if the black bars show up or not. If you see anamorphic on the DVD then it should fit no problem, there will be others however that may have thin black lines still. If the XBOX DVD allows for HDMI connectivity some TV brands do an auto-format so that it fits no matter what, that's on new Panasonic sets now, and others coming down the pipe. they wont.. Yes the bars are going to show but they are going to be very small. Movies have different aspect ratio than HDTVs do. HDTVs aspect ratio is 1: 77.1 and most movies aspect ratios come in 1: 85.1 and 2: 35.1. You are actually more likely to see black bars top and bottom on HD DVD discs. In order to fit widescreen movies to fill the HDTV aspect ratio, either sides have to be cropped or the "pan-and-scan" approach used. That is why many current DVDs show the black bars; they want to avoid this degradation of the original material. There will be even more pressure to avoid tampering with the movies in HD DVD, since that is supposed to be more like the theater experience. I expect that nearly all HD DVDs (both formats) will be presented in OAR (original aspect ratio), i.e. the way the film was made.
